What is Trace and Access?

Trace and access is part of your home insurance policy and covers you for detecting and uncovering leaking pipes in your home. It is important to note that some trace and access insurance only covers the cost of locating the leak, not for repairing it or the damage it caused.

How Many People are Affected by Unidentified Leaks?

Finding the source of a water leak can often be expensive and disruptive. Unidentified leaks are commonplace and, with the tendency for modern properties to have multiple bathrooms and ensuites, it’s becoming even more of an issue. Figures from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) show that insurance providers are paying out £1.8 million every day for damage caused by water leaks.

Does Trace and Access Come as Standard?

Not always. However, according to Defaqto, 94% of building insurance policies have trace and access cover.

It’s important to check the small print of your home insurance policy to find out if you are covered. You don’t want to discover you aren’t covered when you find a leak. Most policies have limits of between £5,000 and £10,000 for this kind of cover.
