There are too many ways in which your property can suffer flood damage to be ignored. Burst river banks are the usual winter culprit but there are others. This is what some of our Property Claim Assist insurance claim customers discovered in July 2021 after flash flooding.
That was the month when the impacts of surface water and sewage flooding were felt so deeply in London. Insurers didn’t seemed to care – not even enough to review the damage. Water poured into basement flats and cellars. This is because the Victorian sewers could not cope with the volume of water. Claims were left unprocessed, however, month after month, until we stepped in.
Property damage from other flooding causes
Marine flooding. This is where homes are flooded because sea defences are breached or a tidal surge occurs. In this case, property damage assessments need to take into account the salt, sewage and other substances carried within the sea water.
Groundwater levels can also rise in saturated land, to the point at which the ground cannot accept any more water. That’s when any more rain leads to groundwater flooding. The unabsorbed water has to go somewhere – perhaps into your home.
When you have sewage, soil, manure and other substances, as well as water, entering your own four walls, it’s a huge stress. There are hygiene concerns on top of all the worry about the financial losses suffered. You also experience fear about the length of time you might have to live differently, or elsewhere, until things are put right. You may have to fight to gain access to alternative accommodation. To do that, you may need your own loss assessor.
