Claim Declined – Home Insurers are Declining Too Many Claims

We all purchase home insurance with the anticipation that, should the unexpected occur, our insurer will swiftly remedy the situation. Yet the latest data reveals a concerning trend. The number of claimants going to the Financial Ombudsman Service to voice their complaints is at its highest in five years.

Claim Declined

A recent article by the consumer group Which? has highlighted one of the most deep-rooted issues within home insurance claims – the unjustifiable denial of claims. In our article, we’ll take a look at the case study examined by Which? and shed light on some of the key reasons why claims are unreasonably denied.

Why Are Claims Unreasonably Denied?

The consumer group Which? examined the case of Nicola Carden, whose septic tank had been forced out of the ground by heavy rainfall. The damage and clear up cost over £20,000. Here are some of the reasons why Ms Carden’s claim was denied by her insurer…

Reason #1: Faulty Workmanship

An engineer’s report commissioned by her insurer suggested the tank hadn’t been properly installed. In August, Nicola had the tank replaced at her own expense and was able to supply photographic evidence that the engineer’s report had been incorrect.

Reason #2: Gradual Damage

After admitting their mistakes, her insurer was quick to find a new reason why the claim should be denied. This time it was gradual damage. According to Which? her insurer argued that an engineer’s report suggested the tank had been undermined by a leak, making it susceptible to being forced out of the ground. Her claim for accidental damage was no longer valid.

How Bad is the Issue?

Believing Nicola’s case was just a one-off, would be a great mistake. In 2022, insurance companies accepted 68% of buildings cover claims, and only 76% for claims on combined home insurance or standalone contents policies. The case of Nicola Carden shows that if you believe your claim is valid even after it has been denied, it is always worth getting in touch with a Loss Assessor for a second opinion.

What to do if Your Insurance Company Unreasonably Declines Your Claim?

Unfortunately, many claimants think that they have no choice but to accept their insurer’s decision. Expert Loss Assessor Simon Colbun from Property Claim Assist has this advice for claimants: “If you think your insurer has unreasonably denied your claim, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. In cases where you cannot resolve your claim with your insurer and the complaint escalates to the Financial Ombudsman, a Loss Assessor can provide crucial support. A Loss Assessor understands the claim process and interprets the complex details of your policy with expertise. We know what information you’ll need and how to present the circumstances of your complaint in the most effective way. Having an expert in your corner really does count.”

Unlike your insurer, a Loss Assessor is always on your side. We work in your interests to obtain the full and fair settlement you deserve. If you’re in need of support with a denied claim, get in touch with our team today by calling 0333 577 2720.

“Thank goodness I had these guys by my side”

After a traumatic accidental house fire I was a little lost on how to deal with the insurance and the claim. I reached out to these guys and thank god I did! Simon and everyone else at Property Claim Assist were invaluable and I honestly don’t know if I could have got through it all without them. Handling a big and complex insurance claim is very stressful and complicated. The guys at PCA explained how everything worked and guided me through it all and took up a lot of slack and a lot of the work. Thank goodness I had these guys to depend on.

“Professional Handling of the Claim while I was Overseas”
Professional, timely, efficient and effective handling of a massive Escape of Water Claim in a Grade II listed cottage. Gary knows the process, has the contacts and gets things done. I was having to deal with this loss while overseas, so having the Property Claim Assist interfacing with the insurance company, surveyor and contractors was a godsend. Would not have had such a fabulous remediation without Property Claim Assist.

“Amazing from start to finish”

Where do I start…Property Claim Assist took our case on when no one else would. They have been brilliant from day 1. We were fighting a loosing battle with the insurance company. They were 100% professional and adept from start to finish. They have been patient and empathetic and got the job done. We will be forever grateful to PCA. The experience has been life changing in many ways but we are in a massively better off position than we were before we contacted them. I cannot recommend PC Assist highly enough.
