Business Safety Week 2023
11th to the 17th of September
Business Safety Week serves as an important annual reminder for small and medium-sized businesses in the UK to prioritise fire safety in the workplace. The overarching goal of this week is to raise awareness of fire safety responsibilities and to safeguard businesses from financial and commercial loss.
Preventable workplace fires not only pose risks to lives but also can be financially devastating, causing some businesses to never fully recover. By implementing simple preventive measures and ensuring that staff are well-prepared to respond effectively to fire emergencies, businesses can not only keep people safe but also make decisions that prevent financial loss.
Fire Safety Legislation Changes in England and Wales
Starting from the 1st of October, significant changes in fire safety legislation will come into effect in England and Wales. It is imperative for businesses and building owners to understand how these changes impact them to ensure compliance with the new regulations. Here are the key modifications:
1. Mandatory Recording of Fire Risk Assessment
All businesses, irrespective of their size, number of employees, or type, will be required to comprehensively record their fire risk assessment and fire safety arrangements. This means that even the smallest enterprises must document their fire safety measures.
2. Enhanced Cooperation and Coordination
In multi-occupied buildings or properties where the occupier and owner are different entities, there will be increased requirements for cooperation and coordination among Responsible Persons. This shift emphasises the importance of working together to ensure the safety of all occupants and visitors.
3. Residential Building Fire Safety
In residential buildings with two or more domestic premises, residents must be provided with information regarding the risks associated with fire and the specific fire safety measures in place to protect them. This crucial step ensures that everyone is well-informed and prepared in case of an emergency.
